Speaker

Maggie Walters, M.A.

Bio

Maggie Walters is the Adventure Centre Director at Pretty Lake Camp. She has been at Pretty Lake in one capacity or another since 2008 and has been in her current role since May 2021. For nearly fourteen years, Maggie has been an Adventure Centre facilitator, working with different kinds of groups and acquiring years of experience and knowledge about teams and team development. As a working professional, Maggie was a special education teacher working with students with emotional disabilities, and doing facilitation work  as a "side hustle." She has an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in History and Political Science from Western Michigan University, and a Master of Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University.

The Adventure Centre is a facility that provides outdoor educational programming geared toward social and emotional learning, self-reflection, personal growth, team cohesion, and team development. It has been around since 1972 and was on the cutting edge of the development of experiential education in the 1970s and 1980s. The Adventure Centre works with many different types of teams, challenging individuals to think creatively, listen intentionally, and communicate openly to grow together. It is the Adventure Centre's philosophy that the best teams are made through shared experiences and a willingness to take risks, and that is what Maggie and her staff keep at the center of every program. Maggie is very proud to be a part of the legacy of phenomenal adventure programming at Pretty Lake, and she takes very seriously her role as steward over its continued success.

Overview

Working together with other people is an unavoidable fact of life. Some teams are very successful in their endeavors and some are not. Why? What is an effective team and how do they measure success? Do effective teams have anything in common? How can I cultivate those qualities in my team? Understanding how to take a group of people and turn it into an effective team is a key to succeeding academically, in your career, and in life.

Objectives

Attendees will leave this workshop with a greater understanding of:

  1. The components needed to enhance an effective team
  2. How to apply this knowledge in a real-world setting
