Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Computing welcomed six new faculty members at the start of the fall 2024 semester to educate a growing student body and to push innovation through rigorous research.

André Bauer, Yutong Wang, and Minxuan Zhou have joined the Department of Computer Science as assistant professors. Huiling Liao and Megan Morrison have accepted roles as assistant professors with the Department of Applied Mathematics. Steven Rubinow has been hired as an associate teaching professor with the Department of Information Technology and Management.

“Welcoming new faculty to the College of Computing is always an exciting time,” says Lance Fortnow, College of Computing dean. “Each of these talented individuals brings fresh perspectives, expertise, and a passion for innovation that will enhance our community. Their contributions will not only drive forward our research and teaching but also inspire our students to explore new frontiers in computing. We look forward to seeing the impact they will have on our college and the broader field.”

Bauer’s research aims to expand the potential of data science in scientific computing, contributing specifically to key aspects of developing intuitive, efficient, and sustainable data science solutions across disciplines and domains. He most recently finished a postdoctoral research stint at the University of �糵����, and he has been an associated researcher at Argonne National Laboratory since January 2003. He earned his doctorate degree from University of Würzburg.

Wang has published research in the areas of uniquely multiclass phenomena through multiclass classification and multilabel learning, theory of overparametrized learning by developing models that interpolate perfectly or nearly, and artificial intelligence and machine learning in gene expression data harmonization, reconstructive spectroscopy for miniaturized spectrometer devices, and biodiversity monitoring for climate change mitigation. He recently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering.

Zhou’s research interests lie in computer architecture, software-hardware co-design, emerging memory/storage technologies, machine learning acceleration, and privacy-preserving computing. He was a postdoctoral scholar at University of California San Diego, where he earned a Ph.D. in computer science.

Liao has published research in the areas of asset pricing models and genetics. She was a postdoctoral associate at University of Minnesota, and she earned a Ph.D. in statistics from Texas A&M University.

Morrison’s research interests lie at the intersection of systems neuroscience and dynamical systems with a goal of developing data-driven methods to characterize and control emergent activity in complex biological neural networks. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Courant Institute and earned a Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Washington.

Rubinow brings a wealth of corporate leadership experience to the classroom as a multifaceted, global executive, strategist, and technology expert who has transformed companies in a variety of industries, including the New York Stock Exchange. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as master’s degrees in marketing and finance, computer science, and screenwriting.
