Clinical Assistant Professor is the recipient of the Stuart School of Business Excellence in Teaching Award for 2019. In presenting the award, Stuart鈥檚 Dean John Bilson lauded Howard鈥檚 rapport and dedicated mentorship with students, both inside and outside the classroom, and wide-ranging contributions to the Stuart community.

鈥淎t the Stuart School, we look for instructors who combine excellent academic credentials with real world experience in their field,鈥 says Bilson. 鈥淧rofessor Howard is an excellent example of this type of instructor. Her executive experience in public administration provides valuable content for her classes.鈥

Associate Dean Roland Calia calls Howard 鈥渁n exceptionally gifted teacher鈥 who routinely draws students from outside the M.P.A. program to her courses. As a mentor, he notes, 鈥渟he regularly uses her extensive contacts to directly assist students in obtaining internships and jobs in the nonprofit and public sectors.鈥

Since joining the faculty of the Public Administration program four years ago, Howard has taught courses in public management, social capital, performance measurement, policy design, ethics and professional responsibility, and other topics. Lively discussions and a ready supply of cookies鈥攂ecause, as she says, 鈥渟ugar makes the class so much sweeter鈥濃攁re among the trademarks of her classroom style.

The award was presented to Howard at the annual Illinois Tech Excellence in Teaching Awards ceremony.
