Professor Sammy Tin and Ph.D. Alumnus Stoichko Antonov Perform Metallurgical Analysis on Armor for NOVA Episode
Professor of Materials Engineering, Sammy Tin, and his Ph.D. student, Stoichko Antonov (Ph.D. MSE 鈥17) performed the metallurgical analysis on a piece of medieval armor for the 鈥淪ecrets of the Shining Knight鈥 episode of NOVA in their lab at Illinois Institute of Technology. The team used optical and electron microscopy to assess the underlying structure of the metal used in the medieval armor and compared it to modern examples. The pair also evaluated some of the armor鈥檚 mechanical properties and provided the micrograph images that are used in the episode.
