Communication-Intensive Courses

As part of the undergraduate core curriculum at Illinois Tech, students must complete writing courses both in and out of their majors. Most students will take first-year writing courses, and then several communication-heavy courses throughout their undergraduate career.

First-Year Writing

The first-year writing requirement at Illinois Tech are designed to ensure you have the fundamental reading and writing skills that you will need to succeed in your major curriculum at Illinois Tech. Fulfilling this requirement consists of two parts, completed in sequence:

  • Part 1: Take COM 101:Writing in the University or COM 111: Writing in the University for Multilingual Speakers of English.
  • Part 2: Take a course at the HUM 200-level (HUM 200, 202, 203, etc.).

Some students will receive credit for COM 101 or HUM 200 through transfer credit, standardized test scores, or the university鈥檚 writing placement test. Please reference the andadmissions resources for more information on receiving credit for these courses.

Upper-Level C-Designated Courses

There are many courses across the curriculum designated with a 鈥淐,鈥 including in each major. Every student is required to take at least 36 hours of C-designated courses, with at least 12 of those hours being in their major, per the university鈥檚 core curriculum. These courses are designed to teach students about the types of writing and communication that are typical in their unique fields. The Communication Across the Curriculum (CAC) program aims to work closely with faculty who are teaching C-designated courses to ensure those courses offer a robust writing education.
