Badgr is a digital badging tool integrated into Canvas that allows instructors to create and issue badges to students based on their achievements within a course. These badges can be awarded for completing specific tasks, mastering skills, or reaching milestones. Badges serve as a form of recognition and motivation for students, and they can be collected and shared as part of a student鈥檚 digital portfolio.
STEP 1: Create a Module
1. Go to your course and click on "Modules" in the course navigation menu.
2. Click "+ Module" to create a new module or use an existing one.
3. Add the activities (assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc.) that you want to be part of the module.
STEP 2: Set Module Requirements
1. Click the three dots next to the module name and select "Edit."
2. Scroll to "Module Requirements" and click "+ Add Requirement."
3. Choose the conditions for completing the module (e.g., submit an assignment, pass a quiz). For example, if you have five items in a module, you need to add a requirement for any item that is a part of your requirement. If you need the students to complete all five items, then you need to add five requirements for those items individually.
4. Click "Update Module" to save the requirements.
STEP 3: Link the Module to a Badge
1.Click on "Credentials" in the course navigation menu.
2. Enter your Illinois Tech email address to create and verify your account. After login, you can see that this tab is empty since you do not have an issuer. To create an issuer, you need to go to Badgr website.
3. Go to and login with your Illinois Tech credentials.
4. Go to the issuers tab at the top and click on the 鈥淐reate issuer鈥 button on the right side.
5. Fill in the blanks:
Issuer name: Instructor鈥檚 name.
Issuer website:
Issuer email: Your Illinois Tech email address
Issuer description: What best describes you?
6. Check I have read and agree to the . *
7. Scroll down and click 鈥沦补惫别鈥.
Now the issuer is created, and you can go back to your course in Canvas.
8. Open your course and go to 鈥淐谤别诲别苍迟颈补濒蝉鈥 on the left-side menu.
9. Now, you should be able to find the issuer that you just created on the website.

11. Fill in the necessary fields under 鈥淏asic Info鈥:
Name: Name of the badge

Earning Criteria Description: Write the description for the badge.
12. Click 鈥淐reate Badge鈥.
13. Choose your badge from the drop-down.
14. Check 鈥淐anvas integration鈥.
15. Under 鈥淪pecify Requirements鈥, select the module that you created in STEP 1. That is the module that you need the badge for.
16. Click 鈥淎dd Badge鈥.
Now the badge is linked to that module and as soon as the students meet all the requirements for that module, they will receive an email including their badge to claim.
