Illinois Tech Partner school students on a 1+1 Master's program (sometimes referred to as a double degree Master's program) are subject to the below requirements.
Prerequisites
Students who are unable to show proof of having successfully passed the prerequisites at their home institution which may be required for certain courses in their IIT Master's degree program, will be obliged to take the prerequisite course(s) at Illinois Tech at an extra cost. As such, this may result in students needing an extra semester or two to graduate depending on the number of courses required for completion and if the courses are passed. Prerequisite course requirements are listed when clicking on a course and its description.
Transfer of Credit
Depending on the specific agreement with the partner school, students from a partner school are on average permitted transfer of credit of up to 6 U.S. credits.
For those following the European system of education:
1 U.S. credit = 2 ECTS
All partner institutions are permitted up to 6 U.S. credits of transfer credit. Only in the Stuart School of Business programs and the Master of Applied Math program are students eligible for up to 9 credits of transfer credit.
When bundling courses for transfer of credit:
- If each course at the home institution is equivalent to 2 ECTS credits, it will be necessary to bundle a minimum of 3 courses at 2 ECTS each that are similar in content and number of hours as the one U.S. course of 3 credits.
- There may be instances of bundling more than 3 courses depending on the ECTS credit variation per course and the course content to meet the course content and number of hours equivalent to one U.S. 3-credit hour course.
Research Project
There may be a requirement by the student's home institution to complete a research project as part of the Master's degree program at Illinois Tech.
The research project must comply with the rules and regulations of both institutions.
Students enrolled at Illinois Tech must seek their assigned academic adviser鈥檚 permission to include a letter-graded Special Problem or Special Project course (xxx597) in their program at the time of enrollment (a research project is optional and not a requirement for an IIT master鈥檚 degree and is subject to the availability of a faculty mentor and a suitable project matching the student鈥檚 abilities and area of interest).
Credit allotment for the research project will vary between 1 and 6 credits depending on the IIT department and the course requirements for the student鈥檚 IIT master鈥檚 degree program.
Students who do not wish to include their home institution's required research project (which may be referred to as the Trabajo fin de Master or Projet de Fin d'茅tudes in Spain and France respectively) as part of their master鈥檚 degree program while at IIT must inform their assigned IIT academic adviser that they prefer to pursue a course-only Master's degree program and inform their home institution as well.

Make sure to attend the IIT Europe New Student Orientation at the beginning of the semester to learn more about these policies and requirements (more info to come via email). Attendance at the IIT Europe New Student Orientation is mandatory and is usually held the week before the Add/Drop deadline in the Fall semester.
