Last month President Biden issued an executive order on artificial intelligence, the government’s most ambitious attempt yet to set ground rules for this technology. The order focuses on establishing best practices and standards for AI models, seeking to constrain Silicon Valley’s propensity to release products before they’ve been fully tested — to “move fast and break things.” But despite the order’s scope — it’s 111 pages and covers a range of issues including industry standards and civil rights — two glaring omissions may undermine its promise.

The general language in the code “does suggest [the justices] consider this [as] aspirational, as opposed to binding,” says Carolyn Shapiro, co-director of the Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States at the University of �糵����-Kent College of Law. “There’s an extraordinary amount of discretion involved in applying these standards,” she adds. But “I’m not sure it would be possible to write standards that don’t have that as an element.”

Esports have exploded at Illinois Tech, prompting plans to expand the program's facility. What could be better than the bar exam? “If I picked a very narrow area of law, people wouldn’t get their head around it,” he says. In March, it emerged that the AI model passed the test, scoring in the 90th percentile.

“The issue really boils down to, how clear must Congress be in waiving the immunity from a damages action for the federal government?” said Harold Krent, professor at �糵����-Kent College of Law.

Add the Illinois Institute of Technology to the growing list of life sciences players moving into Fulton Market. Illinois Tech is taking a full floor, or 34,295 square feet, of lab space in the Fulton Labs building at 400 N. Aberdeen St., which also houses the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub �糵���� and Portal Innovations. “We want to immerse researchers in the budding life sciences innovation ecosystem that’s going on in Fulton Market,” Provost Kenneth Christensen said. “We want to be part of that.”

A team of researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology recently made headlines when they developed a new type of lithium-air battery that has the potential to provide significantly higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion batteries. As described in the research paper, a novel aspect of this design was the use of a solid electrolyte made of a ceramic-polyethylene oxide composite, which is safer and more efficient than the liquid electrolytes used in traditional lithium-air batteries.

“I think it is possible to get zero organic waste into landfills,” said Weslynne Ashton, a professor of environmental management and sustainability at the Illinois Institute of Technology. “But it means that we need an infrastructure to enable that in different locations within cities and more rural regions. It means we need incentives both for households as well as for commercial institutions.”

“This is quite an honor and a ringing endorsement for our work pushing the boundaries of advanced wireless technology,” says Cynthia Hood, associate professor of computer science and engineering and Illinois Tech’s faculty lead in the consortium. “This Strategy Development Grant will enable us to further our research, collaborate more deeply with our partners and accelerate the implementation of advanced wireless solutions in the Midwest.”
